According to statistics from a study done by Casey Family Programs, each year an estimated 20,000 young people "age out" of the US foster care system. Many are only 18 years old and still need support and servcies. Several foster care alumni studies show that without ongoing supportive relationships, these older youth are only left vulnerable to a host of adverse situations. Over half of foster youth who exit the system, do not graduate from high school. Out of those who do complete high school, only 2% go on to earn an undergraduate degree. Within four years of emancipation (exit from the system), up to 60 percent are homeless and 40% are in jail, according to statistics.
